Roger Waters ‘Considering’ Position on Israel Boycott

Roger Waters has backed away, albeit slightly, from comments he made about Israel following a cancelled appearance at Manhattan’s 92nd Street YMCA (a Jewish cultural center) and criticism from multiple parties, including longtime music industry figure Steve Schnur.

In an interview with HuffPost Live, Waters, founding member of legendary rock band Pink Floyd, admitted that he was “considering” his position on Israel, which included a call for fellow musicians to boycott the country.

“The letter asking my fellow musicians to boycott Israel has never appeared,” Waters said. “I am thinking all of this through extremely carefully and I’m thinking it all through extremely carefully because I care more about the outcome, because I care about the people involved, than I do about the moment. I’m being very, very careful to avoid some kind of dramatic moment that could very easily blow up and mean that I, in the long term, have less effect on the outcome.”

While Waters may be reconsidering his position, he’s not about to change his opinion on Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories West Bank and Gaza, which he likened to the apartheid policies separating whites and blacks in South Africa, calling it a “two-tiered racial system. Waters called the settlement in those regions an “impregnable obstacle to peace,” noting that he believes there “can never be peace until the occupation ends.”

“Assuming that you’re rational and that you care about other human beings, the goal strategically should be a solution of the Palestinian refugee problem, an end to the occupation, security and the right to lead a decent life for all the citizens of Israel,” Waters said.

According to Waters, he hasn’t heard back from the 92Y about why his talk was nixed, something he believes is the opposite of what needs to happen in regards to the Israel occupation.

“Not to talk is not an option,” he said. “We have to talk.”
