Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour Pays Tribute to Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’

In addition to being an exceptional songwriter, performer, producer and businessman, Prince was a gifted guitarist, which is why so many members of the rock community continue to sing his praise. And, as Frank Zappa might have put it, some of them are shutting up and playing their guitars.

Nearly four-and-a-half minutes into the 1979 Pink Floyd hit “Comfortably Numb” guitarist David Gilmour launched into a guitar-soaked instrumental version of “Purple Rain” that lasted for more than a minute.

The show took place April 24 at London’s Royal Albert Hall and as the band played, the stage was bathed in purple light. Nearly four-and-a-half minutes into the song, Gilmour played “Purple Rain” on guitar before kicking into the classic “Comfortably Numb” solo at 5:32.
